FirmusGRASS as flooding protection

Firmus Products is involved in a unique pilot project in the Municipality of Arnhem – an experiment to determine whether a strip of water-permeable FirmusGRASS grass tiles can prevent flooding during rainstorms.

Erik Opdam is the initiator of the GroenParkeren (GreenParking) project and spokesman for GroenWest Arnhem, an enthusiastic initiative group of residents with ideas for sustainable neighbourhood management.
He contacted Firmus Products in Geffen and, together with our salesman Sjoerd van Boxtel, worked out all the details of the project. In 2016, they pitched the idea to the Municipality of Arnhem and the GroenParkeren project won the ‘2016 Neighbourhood Award’, worth €1,000. The prize money was used to purchase the pre-cultivated FirmusGRASS tiles.

The neighbourhood residents removed the cobblestones, which were then picked up in Big Bags by the Municipality of Arnhem. The construction company Van der Weerd Grafhorst took care of the groundwork, laying the lava beds and the ready-to-install 1 x 1 metre FirmusGRASS tiles. The proud neighbourhood residents can now enjoy an attractive, water-permeable stretch of greenery. They also take care of all maintenance work (mowing and watering).

The Municipality of Arnhem followed the experiment with tremendous interest. With its hilly landscape, the various areas of Arnhem vary considerably in height. As a result, heavy rainstorms produce an enormous amount of rainwater that needs to be removed quickly and adequately.
The GroenParkeren project will be evaluated in June 2018. More to follow.
